The Family Literacy Program is offered weekday mornings and afternoons and runs concurrently with the Early Childhood Education Program. Last year, women represented 85% of students, with 70% having children under the age of 18. Classroom and computer-based instruction is offered with up to 8 different proficiency levels. Parents attend workshops and programs designed to support their children’s education activities.
The Early Childhood Education Program provides a child-centered literacy-rich environment for young children from 4 months to 5 years old. The program is designed the meet the unique needs of English language learners. Simultaneous literacy instruction for children and their parents creates a valuable synergy – while parents are learning English, their children are preparing for success in elementary school and beyond.
The Workforce Literacy Program is offered in the evenings. Last year, 93% of students reported gained, retained or improved employment as measured by better hours, higher wages or better working conditions. Classroom and computer-based instruction is offered with up to 8 different proficiency levels. Additional computer labs, help students learn how to use email, complete a job application online, and search the internet.
The Student Services Program extends Literacy Achieves’ goal of eliminating barriers to learning and self-sufficiency. In addition to communication skills, students must also have confidence and cultural knowledge to access and navigate community resources in order to achieve personal goals. Dedicated staff provide individualized student assistance for referrals to community resources and coordinate enrichment programs and presentations led by community partners on topics such as legal and financial resources, nutrition, family engagement, and health resources.
