History

Founded as VMLC

Literacy Achieves was founded as Vickery Meadow Learning Center (VMLC) in 1997 to address the critical need for English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for non-English speaking adults in the Vickery Meadow area of Dallas, an ethnically diverse, low-income neighborhood.

Since then, our neighborhood-based organization has experienced tremendous growth – increasing impact through award-winning programs while expanding services to include a children’s program. A second campus was opened in 2009 in West Dallas. Then, in 2015 another site was added in East Dallas when English Language Ministries (ELM), a nonprofit organization that had provided literacy services for 20 years in East Dallas, merged into VMLC becoming our ELM-East Dallas campus.

VMLC is Now Literacy Achieves

In April 2017, we announced that VMLC will become Literacy Achieves in order to honor all that our students achieve through their dedication to learn English.

Today, we serve approximately 1,200 adults and 330 young children annually at the Literacy Achieves campuses in Vickery Meadow, West Dallas and East Dallas. All programs provided by Literacy Achieves are offered at no cost to our students.
